Phantastes – by George MacDonald – a fantasy reference

Phantastes is the a work by George Macdonald (1824-1905).

The fantasy literature is deeply in debt to this author that also wrote the book Lilith.

George Macdonald writes with passion and meaning. His stories are not only intriguing by the way they are developed but also are meaninfull.

The author has the ability to create scenarios which come up to the mind of reader, but the inner soul scenarios of the characters, specially the principal one in the story make the reader to want to go on reading and discover what will the outcome.

Phantastes puts the reader in a faerie land with proper laws and rules, and the protagonist must face many situations as he goes on in the land, having to cross it. There is no turn back on the route he is going.

The works of this author were top influencing elements for C.S.Lewis and J.R.R.Tolkien.

C.S. Lewis was so impressed by MacDonald that he used to say that MacDonald helped him to cross a very significant frontier.

The attentive reader is also transported by MacDonald to a cross reality, where the fundamental feelings of the heart are explored by the author and the desires of the soul are challenged.
